Just to update on the progress on the much awaited gym / common room. Initially we thought about just the relocation of the equipment from B4 to G floor (current renovated area). Since we the council view it to be long term, we have extended the area (still within the budget) to include a community center. In addition to the current gym equipment, we will add a new motorised treadmill, a IR sauna, vending machine etc. Basically it will be a place where residents can chill out.

I'm excited to see the Bigger and Better Gym is under construction. Apart from a new treadmill is there any other equipments?? I hope there could be some dumbbell freeweight available. A sauna too??!! Great.
The renovation of the gym poses some serious issues:
1. Safety: has a permit been obtained with those glass walls and panels. I understand that renovations of public areas in a condominium is governed by statute in this country.
The wind can be quite strong at times and, this can pose a potential hazard which may cause harm to passers by.
2. The Removal of a potential wide space and an airy area where residents can sit and socialise - there ain't one at the present time except for the small enclave by the swing. Was there extensive consultation regarding whether this area would not serve better for this function? I doubt it.
3. Possible obstruction: again related to issue 1. Further challenges include access to the office, access to the car park with the panels right at the edge at the turning
4. The setting up of this, to my knowledge had never seen the authority of an AGM or EGM. The posting of a vague notice over several weeks with a claim that there were no objections etc is a very lame piece of governance.
For heaven's sake, a substantial amount of money is being spent for the benefit of a presumed few, in the name of something else. It is OUR money from our monthly service charge.
Was there an "aye" at the AGM for this to be within the budget for 2008?
Was there mention of a sauna on the notice posted up? Definitely not.
This is a new insertion presumably added by some Council member. In law, this act is term malfeasance. In some jursidictions it is considered corrupt conduct.
Why is there a necessity to move the gym? The present place is discreet, cool and reasonable. Only several machines are working though - according to the regular users.
In the event of an accident or damage or unwilful hurt to a passerby, resident or not, who is to assume responsibility? The Council or the Owners of the Reef?
Only my personal rantings.
Any Council members care to comment?
reeflurker, thanks for the long posting. following is my attempt at responsing to your posting. #1 good comment which i hope mr yeap can look into and clarify. #2 this will be the the place to socialize and sit (as you put it)in addition to checking emails, have drinks with friends, etc. its not only a gym. we hope its a community room with chairs/tables. maybe even a pool table, darts, fridge, music. whatever thats reasonable the majority of residents want! its for you! #3 i don't see any challenge in accessing the office. in fact we have widen the ramp making it accessible to disabled / wheelchairs. if one were to miss the turn to the upper car park and head straight for the glass panel, ones car will hit the 1.5ft concrete "bench" first. thats why its there. #4 upon consulatation with our advisors and much discussion, we concluded that with ample notices and call for comments before the decision is made to proceed suffice.
as for consultation, i think zalman said enough about it. we cannot be expected to personally inform everyone. if people don't take the trouble to read and find out, not much else we can do. as for your suggestion we put notices in all mail boxes, apart from a waste of paper, some portion of owners may still only get to read it much much later if at all as some do not live at the reef or check their mailbox regularly. lets be fair, the management felt that notice board is still the best way to disemminate information quickly and efficiently......unless you have a better suggestion.
lastly, don't know about you but i'm looking forward to the new "reef lounge" (let not call it the gym!!). lets use it to meet up and get to know each other better. perhaps we can plan outings or some other social events for residents! ciao.
hymeir
If the notice was for specifically the relocation of the gym, how did it become a "reef lounge"
Would you like to be woring out all the whil there are people sitting in front of you talking playing?? I think not. Another bad and selfish judgement made by a few committee members who think they have the ultimate power. Terrible.
Reeflurker, you are becoming my favourite blogger here. Keep up the good work.
Geez... Sometimes, it's hard to make a difference and make the apartment a nicer place to stay. U need to kena shoot left and right :P
But I do look forward to spend more time with my fellow neighbors at the new Reef Lounge :)
Hey... I have seen the notices and the estimated funding of the projects on notice boards and liftssss... If I were to count the 'non-blessings' on those projects, I would have voice out during that given time frame.
My 2 cts. :)
Btw... I'm a gym user.. Honestly, the one we have right now, looks like we are exercising in a cage, like monkeys. Very paiseh to show my friends ler....
Dear reeflurker
I do not agree with this statement "This is a new insertion presumably added by some Council member. In law, this act is term malfeasance. In some jurisdictions it is considered corrupt conduct."
The Reef has been very transparent in all the works that have been carried out. It seems that you and a few others using pen names are having issues. The statement for every month is posted on the notice board, as well as a detail accounting on the expenditure can be obtained from the office. The blog is a public domain. The Reef account information is for the residents viewing only. Since you have not identified yourself (you not be from the Reef) and if you are, please visit the Reef's office to view the accounts and cost for each project. We will be more than happy to clarify any matters. Your understanding in this matter is highly appreciated.
